Happy Birthday Bonnie!
Sunday was my youngest ‘daughter” Bonnie’s birthday. I called her to wish her happy birthday – she was in Los Vegas – was planning to celebrate it by going to the casinos and having a few drinks – since she’s now ‘legal’’. And as she was saying this with a trace of pride – I reminded myself that it WAS a source of pride that she has managed to reach this portal, this milestone of becoming an adult – because there were certain times in the past that I was convinced that this day would never come.

Bonnie has not had it easy. She’s grown up faster than any child should have to – dealing with family issues such as the death of her father and her birth mother’s dependence with a maturity far beyond her years. I am so proud of her – how she has stepped up to the plate – shouldered her as well as other’s responsibilities – paying not only her way, but that of her mother and sister so that there is a roof over their heads and food on the table. She has adopted an orphaned kitten – bottle-feeding it and teaching it what it’s mother would have. She cares for the street kids – feeding them and helping them when she can – she is kind and she is determined – loyal to those that touch her heart.

She speaks of the men in her life – 2 of them. One older who wants to settle down and have kids. The other who just wants to have a good time. Most mothers might council their daughters to take the one who wants to settle down – others that she is too young to consider it yet. My advice is to wait and see – that there is no reason to tie herself to one, either, or even both at this or at any other point. That she who has experienced so much in the adult realm already – is entitled to some play time – to experience as much as she wants, needs, and desires – and at any stage of her life that she might choose. I don’t want her to ever completely grow up – and yet in many ways she is old before her time – a woman child paradox.

Here’s to you sweetie – Happy Birthday! You are an awesome young woman – and I am proud to know you. I love you very, very much.

Momma Kate
