Summer - Excerpts from a Letter

The garden is producing to the point I can’t keep up – it’s giving me about 10 lbs of tomatoes every 2 days (course there are 20 tomato plants – inspite of my best intentions I never can just decide on a few).  They are heirlooms – with names like purple Cherokee, Isis candy, black beauty, Roman spring, Amish paste, Italian plum gold, pink hearted lady.  I’ve dried a lot of them (I pack them in jars with olive oil, basil and garlic after they are dried) for later use in pastas, sauces, even a sun dried pesto.  And I make quarts of tomato sauces (several different kinds) and freeze them for later, not to mention salsa and living on tomato sandwiches and salads.  There’s 5 different kinds of beans – yellow, purple and 2 green ones in addition to shell beans which are dried and have wonderful names such as ‘Jacob’s cattle, Dutch golden, Scarlet Runner’.  Peppers – yellow, red, purple, gold, orange and this year even one the color of chocolate.  The newest one I’m trying this year looks like a jalapeño, but its not hot and its called ‘fooled you’.  LOL.  I make stir fries and pepper sauces for pasta and stuff them with crab or lamb and rice, grill them brushed with olive oil bar-b-queue them with cloves of garlic.  There are beets, squash – zucchini and golden crookneck and a beautiful light and dark green stripped one, lemon cucumbers, 3 kinds of melons, onions (sweet Spanish, Walla Walla, red torpedo and green bunching).  Sunflowers for the birds – lots and lots of different kinds of basil and other herbs.  I have bunches of herbs drying for later – oregano, thyme, sage, bay leaves, chamomile and lavender.  The flowers are all blooming – morning glories twining around the shelter I built out of tree limbs over the bench make a private fairy place to read and have a glass of wine as the sun goes down.  A magic place to dream and just give thanks.

It’s beautiful here…long warm California days with that drowsy sunshine that pours over your skin like honey…slightly drugging with the lushness of the garden, the grapes turning purple on the vines over the arbor, the sunflowers all ripening into seed and being fought over by the birds.  We’ve deer that come down into the driveway to eat my flowers, wild turkeys that show off their chicks, quail, even a mountain lion which was sighted up on the ridge.  This year woodpeckers built a nest in the ash tree in the back and taught their young to fly.  The place I’m living backs into a hillside which curves around it much like a crescent moon.  About a half mile away is a very large national park/reservoir and I go there to walk often and enjoy the turning of the Mother’s wheel.  Lammas has come and passed – the full flush of the day now a memory and the abundance of spring flowers now fading.  The green waves of grass on the hills are ripening to gold as summer’s ripe fruits take center stage…wild blackberries and elderberries for the summer wines, jams and cobblers I make, rose hips to be made into syrup for winter….armfuls of lavender to be cut and dried for later along with the scented geraniums – lemon, rose, cinnamon, chocolate peppermint, apple, allspice, nutmeg for sachets and potpourris, massage oils, soaps and candles.  As I enjoy this… Part of me wishes that I could show you, share it with you…see your reactions to the garlic harvested and braided this year, watch your expression at the great tomato tasting … the sauces and the salsas.  I think about a lot of things….as part of me remains practical…self survival….just in case.  Old habits die hard…

* Fortuna Oil *

To a glass bottle add the following:

    One part frankincense absolute oil

    One part lemon essential oil

    Two parts lavender essence

One eighth part citronella essential oil

A few whole aniseeds or saffron threads to the bottle

Eight parts light mineral oil as a base

Fortuna Oil is especially good for anointing lucky charms, and yellow and

orange lucky candles. Since Orange and yellow are the colors of Lammas‑tide,

this oil would be nice to use during Lammas rites, especially those asking

for prosperity in future harvests or in life. Also, Fortuna Oil is also said

to dispose the energies of luck in your favor when rubbed on the palms of

the hands before playing games of chance. A typical Puerto Rican practice is

to buy a lottery ticket and place it beneath a candlestick holding a

dripless yellow candle anointed with this oil. The candles should be held in

the hand and anointed from the middle of the shaft to the top and then from

the middle to the base, as this symbolically addresses the wish for luck to

heaven and then to the energies manifestation on earth.
