On this day I give thanks to those who have served our country and are still doing so regardless of the politics.  I do not agree with the current political agenda of this government.  I do not support the war in Iraq.  I DO however support those men and women who have chosen to go into the military and to serve, protect and guard us, our ideals and beliefs as a nation. 

I do not condone war yet I also know that unanswered aggression only provokes more aggression.  I am proud beyond words to know those who are willing to give their lives, to put themselves out on the line for what they believe in.  We owe each and everyone of them (and not only on this Veteran’s Day but every day) our heartfelt thanks.

My family has long had soldiers and sailors in it.  My father was in the Navy in Korea.  His father fought in Germany.  My brother served in Special Forces.  My nephew is considering the National Guard.  I’ve cousins currently in branches of the military and lost one Peter in Viet Nam.  In my extended family (as dear if not more so to me than my own), I have brothers who are currently serving – one soon to be deployed, another who may be.  I have friends who have returned from wars changed forever and who struggle constantly and will from the effects of what they did and what was done to them mentally, emotionally and physically - including being exposed to Agent Orange and other chemicals which effects are only just being treated after several decades of our government and military itself – denying Veterans benefits. 

On this day I also want to thank each and every spouse, child, parent, brother, sister and the rest of the families who have a member serving in the military.  It is your own personal sacrifices which inspires their service, which makes it somehow easier.  Thank each and every one of you and may the gods hold you safe as they do your loved ones.
